Wilder

Futures

We explore the link between nature, farming, conservation and food production using the farm as a real life learning resource. We believe hands on, practical experience is the best way for children to learn. Each visit can be tailored to the relevant curriculum from Key Stage 1-4.

Children coming on a visit will be able to:

  • Enjoy a walk around the farm, finding out about the history of the farm – learning how and why they are changing their approach to land management.
  • Discover the different habitats and their importance for wildlife.
  • Learn about the newly planted traditional orchard with its Sussex apple varieties.
  • Study the soil and go on a minibeast hunt.
  • Learn how to use maps.
  • Find out about nature recovery and rewilding.
  • ‘Meet’ and find out about the trees and do bark rubbings.
  • Go on a nature scavenger hunt.
  • Learn about beekeeping and try the honey from Mayes Park.
  • Take part in nature-based art activities.

There may also be the opportunity to meet the small herd of rare breed White Park cattle, which are being introduced to manage the wood pasture.

Visits can be tailored to fit with the topics that you are learning about at school and are all designed to be relevant to the age of the children. Links to the curriculum can include – habitats, soils, food chains, plants, pollination, animals, classification, seasons and much more. Dates are planned to fit your requirements and visits fit into the school day.

Educational Access and Schools

Educational access allows for school pupils / school eco councils to visit Mayes Park to learn, understand and become engaged with farming and the environment.

During the visit the links between farming, conservation and food production will be explained, using the land as a classroom and can be tailored to the class curriculum “if required”.

We intend to use Mayes Park as an outdoor classroom, to share what we have learnt, walking around discussing projects we have done, why we have done them, what else we plan to do (and why), whilst giving young people the opportunity to become engaged and hands on with appropriate tasks.

If you are after direct curriculum linked visits, the below list covers examples of what can be incorporated.
